Road Safety Assistant Minister Scott Buchholz says the newly announced trucking apprenticeship will assist with the issue of an aging driver fleet.

He said the average age for truck drivers in Australia is 56.

“So, we have an aging driver fleet.”

He also said young people leaving school now have the “additional capacity” to apply for an apprenticeship in the transport and logistics field.

“This didn’t come about by accident; the industry has been enthused for no less than 30 years – three decades we’ve been trying to secure this.

“And I want to thank all those peak bodies, all those industry groups that have made submissions to senate inquires, countless senate inquiries, and literally hundreds of submissions that have come in all from around the nation.”
